1966 Volkswagen Bus

1966 Volkswagen Bus

This 1966 Volkswagen Bus finished in Glasurit Vintage Green over Black. A true passion project more than a decade in the making, this Bus represents the combined vision and craftsmanship of two well-known names in the Pacific Northwest automotive community: DG Vintage Coachworks in Sultan, Washington and 425 Motorsports out of Kirkland, WA.

The restoration journey began in 2011 under the ownership of DG Vintage Coachworks, where more than 1,000 hours were invested into the body restoration alone. During this phase, the engine and transmission were also rebuilt. In 2015, the project was acquired by Dan Reiss of 425 Motorsports as a completed shell accompanied by the drivetrain, bumpers, windows, and IRS rear suspension setup. From there, hundreds of additional hours were dedicated to bringing the build to what you see here, which finally occurred in 2020. Since completion, the Bus has fewer than 500 miles.

The attention to detail throughout the build is evident. Exterior touches include shaved bumper risers, original pop-out windows and latches, bullet-style turn signals sourced from a 1959 Bus, and a lowered stance achieved through an adjustable narrowed front beam with drop spindles from Vintage VWs. Stopping power comes courtesy of four-wheel Wilwood disc brakes, while the IRS rear suspension greatly improves drivability and road manners.

The color-matched 1776cc engine paired with a custom stainless-steel header and exhaust system. EMPI Fuchs-style wheels complete the period-inspired look. Tires are basically brand new however are 2015 date coded.

Inside, the Bus features a beautifully tailored custom interior completed by Hoglunds in Everett, WA. A suede headliner and thoughtfully executed upholstery work elevate the cabin while maintaining the vintage aesthetic that makes these early Volkswagen buses so iconic.

This is the kind of build that simply could not be replicated today without an enormous investment of time, craftsmanship, and resources.
